Charm School: Roller Derby 101
Register for All Three Sessions
Want to learn more about roller derby? Then join us at one of our Charm Schools where you will get a small dose of roller derby basics. Get comfortable on your skates while learning what the sport is all about. No experience necessary. We will cover many of the skills required to successfully complete Charm U: Tryout Boot Camp. However, Charm School attendees are not obligated to move forward with Charm U and are not required to be affiliated with a league.
Skaters may attend one or all of the scheduled Charm Schools. The following classes are available:
Each session will be held at Skateland North Point in Dundalk, MD, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Charm Schools are open to able-bodied men and women over the age of 18. Sessions are only $15 per person. All participants must sign an insurance waiver and have full protective gear, which includes: elbow and knee pads, wrist guards, a helmet and a mouth guard. Quad roller skates are also required.
The Charm City Roller Girls (CCRG) is Baltimore's only all-female flat track roller derby league. CCRG is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association and is proudly skater owned and operated.
Visit www.charmcityrollergirls.com or e-mail email@example.com for more information.

Skateland North Point
1111 North Point Rd.
Dundalk, MD 21222
The rink will be open at 10:15 a.m. for signing in and gearing up. Classes will formally begin at 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Who can attend?
Men and women age 18 or older who would like to increase their derby knowledge. Quad roller skates and full protective gear are required. All participants must sign an insurance waiver.
How much is it?
$15 per person. You may purchase at the door.
Are these league tryouts?
No. Tryouts for the league start February 18, 2013. Visit our Web site for more information about how to sign up. However, the skills taught at each Charm School are useful for any person interested in joining any league.
Can my mom come take pictures of me?
No. We will treat these classes like intense derby practices; therefore, we will not allow guests or photography of any kind. This should be a safe environment for skaters to experiment and get out of their comfort zone. Skaters should inform their guests that the venue will only be open for Charm School participants and CCRG staff.
What should I bring?
How is this going work?
Each class is subject to the expertise of the CCRG coaches in charge. But, the basic structure will include derby building blocks that are congruent with the foundations of derby.
The fine print…
We skate per the rules outlined in the current Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rule set. Visit http://wftda.com/rules for more information.
Participation is entirely voluntary and at one's own risk. EMTs will not be on hand, but there are several hospitals and fire departments in the immediate vicinity.
What can I do to help make this the best possible experience?
Please arrive on time. Doors will open at 10:15 a.m. Classes will start at 10:30 a.m. While it may be feasible to join the clinic in progress, it is disrespectful to the coach and your classmates to arrive behind schedule. Arriving at 10:15 a.m. should provide ample time to complete the paperwork and gear up.
When you arrive, please set your gear down and then come to the counter to sign in. Make sure that your business is in order (payment or payment receipt, waiver) PRIOR to putting on your gear. This will prevent us from having to delay the clinic start time. We must have everyone’s paperwork completed before we begin. A coach will lead a warm up as a foundation for the skills to come.
When skating, expect a wide range of abilities and experiences. Avoid taking advantage of people who may clearly be less experienced than you. A major incentive to attend these dates is to provide a low-pressure training ground for EVERYONE involved in roller derby. Remember, these dates are not bouts or mini bouts or even formal scrimmages. They are opportunities to learn. While we all love to push ourselves and our fellow participants to become better at roller derby, if you are disrespectful to any participant, you can expect to be asked to leave without refund. Please display your best sportsmanship and derby love at these events.
The coaches will provide time for cooling down and stretching before the completion of the clinic. However, out of respect for our venue, we need to vacate the rink by 12:45 p.m.
